[Attention men] Three science-backed tips for “keeping your manhood” as you age

Dear Reader,

When it comes to our “biological clock,” most women pay closer attention to their age and fertility than do men.

But a new study shows that men experience a similar drop in virility and fertility as they get older. Plus, when men wait longer to start a family, it affects the mother and child’s health, too.

Fortunately, as I’ll explain, there are three, simple, science-backed steps men can take to “keep their manhood” as they get older. (Perhaps you can share these important details with your children and grandchildren.)

And—as an added bonus, these steps help men stay in great shape…no matter their age!

Let’s jump in…

More and more men and women put off starting a family

The average age of first-time mothers in America is now 26 years, while for fathers it’s 31 years. And the percentage of dads over the age of 50 at the child’s birth has DOUBLED in recent years.

But as this new study shows, once men pass their 50th birthday, they can have problems fathering children—even with assistance of cutting-edge fertility technology…

To start, researchers followed more than 4,000 couples struggling with infertility. They all received assisted reproductive techniques—such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Some even underwent multiple cycles of IVF or ICSI.

It turns out, about 41 percent of the cycles resulted in a live birth.

But the chance of a live birth occurring was 33 percent lower among fathers over 50.

That’s a pretty staggering statistic all by itself. But, it gets worse…

Other research shows when the father is older than 45 years, it:

  • Increases the mother’s risk of developing gestational diabetes
  • Increases the risk of preterm birth
  • Increases the risk that the newborn child will suffer seizures

Not only that, but children of older parents more commonly suffer from neurological and psychiatric disorders as well as other poor health outcomes.

Why does paternal age affect so much?

As you probably know, older men tend to have lower sperm counts and slower sperm overall, both of which hinder fertility.

Not to mention, the sperm they do have seem to exhibit more “DNA fragmentation.” (DNA fragmentation occurs when the DNA isn’t packaged well inside the sperm.) And studies link greater DNA fragmentation with poorer IVF outcomes—especially poor fertilization and early miscarriages.

Thankfully, it appears that older men CAN take steps to prevent DNA fragmentation and, ultimately, boost fertility. Plus, as I mentioned above, these steps can improve a man’s overall health at ANY age:

1.) Follow a healthy, balanced Mediterranean-type diet. Everyone, especially older men, should strive to follow a sensible, enjoyable Mediterranean-type diet filled with whole foods, natural fats, and natural fibers. Here’s a list of foods you can—and should—enjoy on this diet:

    • Full-fat, whole-milk dairy, including butter, eggs, cheeses, and plain yogurt.
    • Wild-caught fish and seafood.
    • Grass-fed and -finished, free-range, organic beef, chicken, and especially lamb.
    • Nuts and seeds.
    • Five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Alcohol, in moderation. (In fact, a recent study linked moderate alcohol consumption to higher semen volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm count.)

I’d also make sure to add plenty of healthy, fresh tomatoes, tomato sauces, and pumpkin seeds (pepitas) to your daily diet, as they all contain lots of lycopene. And studies link this powerful carotenoid to improved prostate health and fertility.

2.) Engage in moderate exercise each week. Studies show you get optimal health benefits from engaging in just 140 to 150 minutes of exercise each week. And, as always, I urge you to get your exercise outside in Nature for the added exposure to sunshine. I would just make a note to stay away from strenuous bicycling if you’re trying to conceive, as research shows it can harm a man’s genital area and urinary tract.

3.) Reduce stress with mind-body approaches. Research shows relaxation and stress-reduction approaches like mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can help with fertility and prostate health overall.
