Dear Reader,
A recent study found eating this sweet, dried fruit can help you lose 23 percent MORE weight.
It’s something that my own grandmother always kept in the cupboard for when she got a little “backed up”…
And truthfully, it’s a kitchen staple for many older adults.
Here’s how you can now take advantage of it and BOOST your weight-loss efforts, to boot…
Boost satisfaction and weight loss
Prunes are dried plums. And similar to other powerhouse fruits in the Rosaceae family—like cherries and rosehips—they contain loads of important vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols.
And clearly, they can do MUCH more for your health than just help with your “morning constitutional.”
Of course, they do contain some natural sugar, which is why some people avoid them. But remember, as I report in the current issue of my Insiders’ Cures newsletter, your body metabolizes the natural sugar in fruit differently than it does the table sugar found in processed foods.
And according to a new study, people looking to lose a few pounds should absolutely ADD prunes to their daily diet—not avoid them…
Researchers from the University of Liverpool in the U.K. divided their research into two phases.
In the first phase, they noted the participants’ feeling of satisfaction (or satiety) after eating prunes, raisins, or jelly bean candies.
It turns out, when they ate prunes, they reported feeling:
- Less hungry throughout the day.
- More satisfied after eating (increased satiety).
- Like they couldn’t eat as much later on.
Plus, when the men and women snacked on prunes, they consumed fewer calories at their next meal.
In a second phase of the study, all the men and women participated in a 12-week weight-loss program. In addition, one subgroup ate prunes as their daily snack. The other subgroup received guidance on healthy eating and snacking, but they could choose any snack they wanted.
After 12 weeks, the participants who ate prunes daily lost 23 percent more weight than the other subgroup. They also said they felt it was easier to lose the weight than those who ate other snacks.
Not too shabby for a sweet, little fruit relegated for decades to grandma’s cupboard…
Enjoy more prunes this spring—and year-round!
In the end, prunes are a real “plum” when enjoyed as part of healthy, Mediterranean-type diet. You can also count them toward your daily goal to eat five fruits and vegetables per day.
Snack on them all by themselves, as the people in this study did, or you can toss them on top of some organic, full-fat yogurt or into a spring salad. They also pair well with lamb, which has the highest fatty-acid profile of all the meats.
